Does emotional regulation = being calm?

Well yes... and no.

When we are more regulated, we often 'feel' calmer in our bodies, and our thoughts may be quieter.

But regulation isn't about shutting down our emotional experience. It's about having the capacity and flexiblity to respond - and then, as the horses do, return to grazing.

When we are regulated, we can think more clearly and have more choice in how we respond.

We might still feel angry, nervous, excited, or disappointed, but we are not overwhelmed by it.

Horses don't force regulation, or try to "stay calm." They move their bodies, breathe out, notice their surroundings, express what they feel, seek support as needed from their herd, and then they settle again.

It's not about eliminating activation. It's being able to return.

For me, regulation feels like I'm coming home to myself - I'm not controlled by the moment, but rather have more choice and a greater sense of safety in my own body. I also feel like I show up in my relationships in a more intentional way.
